Welcome to the Beginners Dutch Grammar of the School of Languages & Cultures at the University of Sheffield. This grammar is aimed at students of Dutch at beginners’ level. If you are an intermediate or advanced student interested in Dutch grammar, we advise you to use our Advanced Dutch Grammar. The Beginners Dutch Grammar can be used independently or as part of an existing course.
The Beginners’ Grammar consists of the following sections:
- Spelling. This section is about spelling and pronunciation.
- Words. This sections is about different types of words, for example nouns, verbs or conjunctions. If you click on the relevant sections, you will find links to sub-sections about all types of words, e.g. pronouns.
- Sentences. This section has sub-sections about different types of sentences (e.g. imperative), sentence structure (including word order) and constituents (the elements of a sentence, e.g. subject and object).
